Today we are encouraged through social media, the internet, television and the tabloids to be perfect. This pursuit of perfection is often stopping us from moving forward. But maybe it's time to realise that being good enough is good enough.
I once heard James Cracknell speak about his life in rowing. Fresh from a gold medal winning performance at the Olympics he spoke about being the best. He had an interesting take on it though, he said he trained to be the best, but on the day he just had to be good enough. He meant he just had to be better than number 2 - then he was good enough.
Training to be the best
Training to be the best allows you to be good enough, and often good enough is all you need.
Of course he put in the hard work and it paid off. He challenged his body to the limit, and so did his team mates. They worked as a team, they supported each other, and they reaped the rewards.
The pursuit of perfection
The pursuit of perfection can stop you from doing. Doing could be writing a book, making a staff presentation, trying a new workout, visiting a new place, testing a new market, quitting your job.
But maybe it's time to just try. Stop and think what do you want, what difference could it make, what's the worst that could happen?
Take on the challenge, don't be afraid
I have never been afraid of a challenge, in fact I can be quite determined to give things a go - it doesn't frighten me. I would like to be perfect, but I have come to realise that striving for perfection just holds me back. I am constantly striving to push the boundaries and make a difference. If there's something new, or something to volunteer for, I usually raise my hand.
But even with these bold statements I sometimes find myself doubting whether or not I am good enough. I can question whether I am doing a good job or making a difference. I can sometimes listen too much to the negative voices around me.
So, here's my advice for when the voices start thinking about taking over.
Be original, show off your style, and tell your story
Don't be afraid
Look for new challenges
Dive in at the deep end
Know that you will make mistakes
Learn from your mistakes
Be the best you can
Remember that good enough is good enough
